Mini Milk Carton Houses

Don't throw out your milk cartons! Just give them a good wash, and they'll be ready to recycle into houses. I used the small cartons on this trio, taking my inspiration from the colorful Victorian houses found in San Francisco, California.

I started by cutting 1/2" strips of white cardstock, and used a stiffer brush to apply a coat of clear gesso. Once dry, I colored them with Distress Crayons (Peacock Feathers, Chipped Sapphire, Picked Raspberry, Seedless Preserves, Shaded Lilac, and Wilted Violet), smudged them with my fingers, and added (Black Soot) around the edges. After cutting out the doors, I layered and glued them around the carton like siding on a house. The windows were stamped and embossed with Emerald Creek Boho Blends (Wrought Iron) Embossing Powder. Then I colored them with the same Distress Crayons using a brush and water for a softer effect.

I used my leftover scraps from the siding, to make the bottom halves of the doors, by cutting the width of the 1/2" strips in half, and piecing them back together. Small brads were used for the knobs, and the doors framed with pieces from a cereal box. The framing, window sills, (cut with the Cricut Expression using the George and Basic Shapes cartridge), and scallop stamping along the eaves, were embossed with Ranger Mixed Media Powder (Bone).

The roof shingles are actually the centers of a flower stamp, that reminded me of a peacock feather, and were embossed with Emerald Creek (Black Cherry) Aroma Embossing Powder.

Thanks so much for stopping by!

Mixed Media Academy ~ November Challenge (I've been in the mood to create little houses lately, and wanted to make haunted ones for Halloween, but instead went Victorian, which was perfect for this color combo)

Believe in the Impossible Postcard

I'm still fairly new at postcard art, but really love working with the 6" X 4" size! It's perfect for trying new techniques or products, like the Metallic Distress Crayons I tried out here.

The first step was stamping the checkers and script with some Clear Finnabair Stamps using (Jet Black) Archival Ink. Then I fussy cut all of the images from a sheet of Bo Bunny (Land of Wonder).

All of the images, a strip of washi tape, and torn pieces of white cardstock were adhered and coated with Ranger Multi Medium Gloss. Then I colored the background with Distress Crayons (Barn Door, Festive Berries, Antique Linen, Seedless Preserves, and Peacock Feathers). Imagining a broken cup, I colored the torn pieces with Black Soot, and rubbed the edges with (Brushed Pewter and Tarnished Brass) Metallic Distress Crayons. Wanting to bring those pieces out more, I outlined them with (Brushed Pewter and Antiqued Bronze) Distress Spray Stains and splattered some onto the background.

The pearls are from a couple of sets of Bo Bunny Jewels, but can't remember where I got the metal gears.

All I did to the gears were light touches of (Brushed Pewter) Metallic Distress Crayon, which was SO fast and easy, and looks awesome!

Everyday Art Journal Spread

Are you starting to feel caged in? That's what my latest art journal spread conveys with the chicken wire, and the bugs representing the horrible Coronavirus that's been affecting the whole world!

My inspiration took off with the main April Challenge at More Than Words, which was nice since lately I've only been playing in the mini challenges.

The background started with a coat of Prima Black Gesso, and torn strips from an old dictionary. Once dry, I added Prima White Gesso to The Crafter's Workshop 12" (Chicken Wire) Stencil. Then I stamped the fencing with an older clear Prima Stamp using Ranger (Jet Black) Archival Ink.

All of the flowers and bugs were fussy cut from some Graphic 45 (Flutter) papers and glued to my pages. Then I sealed everything with a coat of Prima Marketing Soft Matte Gel.

I went over the stencil work with Distress Crayons (Chipped Sapphire, Mermaid Lagoon, and Mustard Seed) and water, as a challenge to myself since I rarely use them. Then I did some shading around the images with (Black Soot). I had so much fun using them again, and will definitely keep them in mind for future projects!

The quote was stamped onto strips of white cardstock with (Jet Black) Archival Ink, and embossed onto black cardstock with Lindy's Gang (Purely White) Embossing Powder.

I only used one bird, a diecut from the Bo Bunny (Serendipity Collection) to represent those that are in isolation right now, whether from fighting this disease or staying home, and for each one of us, healthy or not, to find your own inner light and strength. One day we WILL break free of these fences!

Hello, Spring ~ FotoBella DT

Today is officially the first day of Spring, bringing warmer temperatures and new growth. Since I'm fairly new to Distress Crayons, I decided to play with them again in my art journal, using Bo Bunny's Secret Garden Ephemera, Noteworthy, and Chipboard from FotoBella.com.

From the Ephemera, I tore some strips from the book page, inking the edges with Black Soot Distress Ink using my Blending Tool. Then I stamped over them and the background with Prima Marketing's Garden Fable Stamp using Ranger's Jet Black Archival Ink. After a few spritzes of Antique Linen Distress Spray Stain, I went over everything with a coat of Prima Marketing's Clear Gesso to prime it for the Distress Crayons

From Set #1, I used Picked Raspberry and Twisted Citron, from Set #2, Chipped Sapphire, Peeled Paint, and Seedless Preserves, and from Set #3, Antique Linen and Black Soot. Some areas along the right didn't blend so well, but could'v been from not enough gesso. So I used a baby wipe to lighten up some of my colors, and to rub through Tim Holtz' Blossom Stencil.

The patterned paper in the middle comes in Bo Bunny's Secret Garden Ephemera. I tore along the edges, and went over them with Black Soot Distress Crayon, blending it with my fingers. Then I added the glittery bird and Hello, Spring banner from the Noteworthy.

Finally I added the Chipboard strip of grass, next to the grasshopper that I colored with my Distress Crayons!

Stop by FotoBella.com for these supplies and more! Thanks for looking!
